Matthew Herbert is a British composer known for creating music from unconventional sound sources. The Horse, produced with the London Contemporary Orchestra, begins with recordings of horse bones and gradually builds into a powerful orchestral work.
The objective was to design a poster for the performance and extend the concept into a vinyl package. The visual direction centers on physical mark-making and texture. Paint was pressed across rough surfaces to create dense, high-contrast patterns that reflect the raw and organic character of the music.
The vinyl is presented in a gatefold sleeve held together by an outer band. Opening it creates a slow, ritual-like moment that mirrors the album’s progression, moving from the sound of bones toward the presence of a living horse. The poster and packaging share the same bold textures and typography, forming a cohesive visual identity for the project.
